Domain registration at a glance
What is a Top Level Domain?
A Top Level Domain is the domain extension such as .de, .net, .org, .info, .biz, etc.
These top level domains are additionally differentiated into so-called generic domains (gTLD) - domain endings that are not assigned to a specific country and country code domains (ccTLD), i.e. domains that are assigned to a specific country, such as .de (Germany), .dk (Denmark) or .it (Italy).
In recent years, new domain endings have been added again and again. These domain extensions are called "new gTLD" in the domain trade. In other words, new, non-country-specific domains. These include domains such as .store, .shopping, .email or .berlin.
A domain as such is essentially a cornerstone for operating one's own website on the Internet. Without a domain name, every Internet user would always have to enter the IP address of the respective server, and only the operation of a single website would be possible per IP address.
Duration and runtime takeover of a domain
Each domain is always registered for a specific duration. Usually the duration of a domain is one year. This means that after one year the domain must be renewed again so that it does not lose its validity.
Some domain endings offer a so-called term takeover so that a possibly already paid term is not lost in case of a domain transfer. In this case, the already paid term is added to the total term, so that the renewal of the domain is postponed. The following domain endings offer this possibility:
com, net, org, biz, info, ag, asia, au, ca, cc, co, cat, cz, dk, es, eu, hk,in, jp, lt, me, mobi, mx, nu, nz, pl, ru, se, tel, travel, tv, tw, uk, us, ws, xxx.
Unfortunately, our automatic domain registration system is not able to register a term transfer, so in case of a term transfer you will have to contact our customer support.
Transfer domain
To transfer a domain from one provider to another, many domain extensions require a so-called AUTH code. With the help of this code the new provider can initiate a domain transfer and move an existing domain.
The previous provider is obligated to provide you with the AUTH code for your domain. Many providers have implemented a corresponding function in their customer system for this purpose, which, however, requires prior cancellation of the domain. It is important to note that the domain will not be deleted directly if the cancellation has been deposited for it.
If you want to transfer the domain to our domain administration, you can deposit the necessary AUTH code in the course of the order process. Afterwards we will transfer your domain for you.
Special feature of umlaut domains
Since 2003 umlaut domains are also possible for domain registration. Many registries have different defaults, which umlauts are allowed. The umlauts are then converted in the client browser according to the so-called IDNA2003 procedure, since the Internet actually does not know umlauts according to the American procedure.
The registration of umlaut domains is in principle also possible with us, but it must be clear that umlauts in a domain name exclude certain visitors from the Internet. Umlauts such as ä, ö or ü are not known on American keyboards, so you exclude this group of users as far as possible when choosing an umlaut domain. Therefore we recommend to avoid umlauts as far as possible when choosing a domain name.
Premium Domains
With the introduction of the new gTLDs, a new product has also been established - the so-called "Premium Domains". Hereby a registry can determine that especially short domain names or domain names with special terms get different prices than other domains.
For example, if you want to register go.trade, the registry for .trade domains may charge 2,500.00 Euro per year for domain registration instead of 25.40 Euro per year. Therefore, significant price deviations may occur.
We try to consider and display these price deviations already when querying the domains via our Domain Whois Tool. In some cases, however, this is only possible in the course of the registration process before the domain is purchased. In this case we would of course inform you about possible additional costs before completing the registration process and clarify them.
