Linux Ceph vServer
Special Features Ceph HA vServer
Our Linux Ceph HA vServers are based on a highly available redundant Ceph data storage. The Ceph storage consists of NVMe U.2/U.3 SSDs and each vServer node is connected to a redundant 100 Gigabit/s network connection. If one of the vServer hypervisors fails, the virtual machines are automatically distributed to other vServer nodes using high availability groups. The downtime in case of an absolute failure is therefore only a few seconds. Live migration for system updates at the vServer hypervisor level is also easily possible, ensuring complete maintenance tolerance.
In addition to network redundancy, each of the Linux Ceph vServer host systems has redundant power supplies and hot plug hard drive bays. Defective NVMe SSDs can therefore be replaced on our Linux Ceph vServer nodes during operation within the shortest possible time to ensure data integrity.
We provide common Linux operating systems to our vServer customers via 1-click installation. An installation of the Linux vServer using an own ISO is also possible.

The administration of our vServers is handled via our self-developed vServer management system. Installation, restarts, monitoring, IP management, and traffic analysis become effortless.
Through the individual dialogs, you always have direct access to the most important parameters and actions.
We offer all common operating systems for installation. Either as an automatic Cloud-Init installation. If we do not offer your desired operating system, ISO images can also be installed via VNC access.
Whether it's installation or troubleshooting. With VNC, you have direct access to your vServer at all times.
Snapshot and backup management is also simple and clear. This means you have everything under control, even if a problem arises.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Ceph HA vServer?

Our Ceph HA vServers are virtual servers that are operated on a highly available cluster with Ceph-distributed storage. This keeps your server online and your data protected and replicated even in the event of hardware failures.
What is Ceph and how does it work?

Ceph is a distributed open source storage system that automatically distributes and replicates data across multiple physical hosts. IP-Projects always use at least three Ceph nodes. Ceph distributes the data between all server systems according to a hash procedure. In contrast to RAID, Ceph is also suitable for very large data volumes, distributes them across several physical systems and is flexibly scalable. It ensures accordingly:
- Redundancy of data
- Self-healing in the event of failures
- Scalability without downtime
- Load distribution
What does “HA” mean in this context?

HA stands for High Availability. For our Ceph HA vServer this means:
- Automatic failover of host or hard disk problems
- Live migration to other nodes in the event of hardware defects
- Minimal downtime thanks to clustering
- Maintenance tolerance by moving the vServers to other cluster nodes during live operation
What is the infrastructure behind a Ceph HA vServer?

We rely exclusively on high-performance AMD EYPC systems for our Ceph HA vServer products. We also use Datacenter NVMe SSDs and a 200 Gigabit/s LACP network:
- Ceph Cluster with (at least 3) storage nodes (OSDs)
- Enterprise-Hardware NVMe SSDs
- Redundant network through LACP channel via different network switches
Who is a Ceph HA vServer suitable for?

In general, our Ceph HA vServer products are always suitable when high data security and reliability are required:
- Need for the best possible uptime and data integrity
- Critical applications or web stores
- Databases, mail servers, container workloads
- Productive customer projects
How does Ceph Backup & Monitoring work?

As with most of our vServers, the Ceph HA vServer offers include daily data backups at one of our other locations. These automatic backups can be extended to a rotation cycle of up to 7 days for a fee. There is also the option of booking an additional backup drive, which can be integrated as SMBv3 within the Ceph virtual machine. In order to always achieve maximum availability, the status of the Ceph cluster is of course also permanently monitored. A defective OSD within the Ceph cluster is detected by us at an early stage and replaced by our data center technicians without a maintenance window during operation.
Is the Ceph HA vServer dedicated or shared?

Our Ceph HA vServers are located on a Ceph cluster consisting of at least three hypervisors, which are shared with other customers. The KVM hypervisor of the host system handles the demarcation between the customer servers. The resources are limited per vServer, which means that it is not possible for a single customer to use all system resources. The limitation is based in particular on the IOPS (input/output requests per second) of the NVMe SSDs and the maximum write and read speed. In general, we also offer our customers exclusive Ceph HA clusters. These are then set up individually according to customer requirements and provided exclusively as dedicated servers. If required, please contact us!
Can I expand my Ceph HA vServer later?

As part of our Ceph HA vServer packages, it is possible to expand the virtual machine at any time. If you have reached the maximum expansion level 'Ceph HA vServer XL', our experts will be happy to provide you with an individual offer and can then support you in exporting the vServer - for example to a dedicated host environment.
What are the special features of Ceph compared to other cluster file systems?

Ceph stands out from other cluster file systems (such as GlusterFS, MooseFS, Lustre, DRBD, ZFS, etc.) in many ways. Through its architecture, flexibility and especially through its focus on distributed, fault-tolerant and scalable storage. IP-Projects has been working with Ceph in conjunction with high-availability cluster environments for many years and its fault tolerance in particular has convinced us. So far, our customers have never experienced any data loss even in the event of major error scenarios. In addition, simple scaling across the board is possible at any time without risk. Ceph is therefore particularly suitable for:
- Virtualization (e.g. Proxmox, KVM, OpenStack)
- Cloud-native environments (Kubernetes, Object Storage)
- High availability / Enterprise Hosting
- Fast, secure storage of large amounts of data
- Scalable infrastructures with many clients or VMs
Is the Ceph Cluster Hybrid or Exclusive?

We use Ceph as hybrid storage. This means that virtual machines can also be located on the storage nodes at the same time. There are numerous advantages to this approach:
Efficiency
As no additional hardware is required for a separate, pure storage cluster. This approach not only saves costs for necessary licenses and hardware, but also energy.
Low latency & better performance
As the VMs are located directly next to the local Ceph OSDs, the access time to the data is reduced and the network is noticeably relieved.
Resilience
Even in the hybrid use case, fail-safety remains intact. In our setup, we also ensure that a certain total size is not overwritten. By distributing all VMs across multiple clusters, you get the best performance while minimizing the risk of failure.
Is the Ceph cluster operated across multiple locations?

All Ceph cluster nodes are currently located at our highly certified server location FRA1-NTT. There are currently no plans for site redundancy in several regions, as there have been no customer requests for this to date. Technically, however, this would be possible - thanks to the large number of our data center locations - and would be the next development step in our Ceph HA vServer product line.
Linux vServer operating systems
Linux Ceph HA NVMe SSD vServer Administration
Ceph HA vServer administration features
Of course, basic vServer administration functions are available with all our vServer products. These include:
- starting / stopping / restarting
- (re)installation
- VNC remote access
- stats like utilization and traffic
Following features are available with each of our vServer offerings:
Ceph HA vServer Backup Management
To always have a backup of your current data, each of our Linux Ceph HA vServer includes free backups of the last 24 hours.
The backups are also stored decentrally in a separate data center so that data loss due to a fire is impossible.
Linux Ceph HA SSD vServer Operating System Installation
The installation of our Linux Ceph HA vServer is possible as 1-click via our server management. Thereby all common Linux operating systems are available. If you still need a special Linux, you have the possibility of an ISO installation.
The ISO installation is then done with the help of a VNC console, which is directly integrated into our server management. An additional VNC client is not required to use this management function.
Permanent VNC Console
To ensure that you always have the ability to access the virtual machine regardless of the Linux Ceph HA vServer operating system, a permanent VNC console is available through our vServer administration panel. Therefore, if you make any misconfigurations - for example on the network - you can use this VNC console to undo the misconfiguration without the need for our customer support or restoring a backup.
The VNC console can be called directly from the web interface. An additional VNC client is not required, which makes working with VNC much easier at this point.
IP and R-DNS Management
Of course you can view your IP addresses and set R-DNS / PTR entries via our Linux Ceph HA vServer management. Setting R-DNS / PTR entries on an IP address is necessary to ensure smooth email traffic. Many e-mail servers on the Internet reject e-mails if no R-DNS / PTR entry is set for an IP address. Our name servers are also secured using DNSSEC to prevent manipulation of these entries by third parties. Likewise, all IP addresses that we provide to our customers are secured using RPKI.
